The third round of the ATP WTA tournament in Indian Wells reserved new surprises on Tuesday with the elimination of Italian Matteo Berrettini by American Taylor Fritz and Canadian Leylah Fernandez by American Shelby Rogers.

The Italian Matteo Berrettini, N.7 at ATP, was sharply eliminated 6-4, 6-3 in 1h21 by the American Taylor Fritz, 39th in the world rankings, in the third round of the Masters 1000 which is played in the Californian desert.

The N.5 seed conceded his service three times in the first set, before being broken at the start of the second at 2-1.

Berrettini, a Wimbledon finalist earlier in the year, still saved four match points before losing to an opponent who had already beaten him two years ago at the Davis Cup in Madrid.

Taylor Fritz therefore continues his way at home.

In the round of 16, he will face another Italian, Jannik Sinner, who benefited from the withdrawal of the American John Isner.

Spaniard Pablo Carreño (N.12) was swept away by Russian Karen Khachanov (N.24) 6-0, 6-4.

In the women's draw, American Shelby Rogers eliminated young Canadian Leylah Fernandez, 19, in straight sets, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) in the round of 16.

Rogers defeated the surprise finalist of the last US Open after a marathon of 2 hours and 34 minutes.

After the first two sets were split and tied for a 4-4 tie in the decisive tie-break, Rogers took the backhand advantage and then won the next two points to secure the game.

"It's a question of who was able to win in the points," explained Rogers, "of who could control the point first."

"She has a bright future. Luck was on my side today and I look forward to the quarter-finals."

The American will face the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, who for her part easily got rid (6-4, 6-3) of the Polish Iga Swiatek, seeded N.2.

Ostapenko won 65% of the points on his first serve and took the serve from Swiatek four times in that 93-minute encounter.

Before Swiatek's elimination, No.1 seed Karolina Pliskova and defending champion Bianca Andreescu were eliminated.

Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (N.4) was severely beaten by Jessica Pegula (USA / N.19) 6-1, 6-1.
