“Pink October” campaign for mammogram screening and breast cancer awareness in Abu Dhabi

On the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, VPS Healthcare is organizing the "Pink October" campaign for mammogram screening in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which will be available to all women over 40 years old through the mobile clinic, with the aim of spreading awareness about breast cancer and identifying cases undiagnosed.

As of Thursday, October 14, specialized doctors will travel between the regions of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in a truck designated and equipped to examine the mammogram, as part of the campaign that will last 30 days until mid-November, and examinations will be in 15 locations in Abu Dhabi, while the campaign will adhere to implementing strict preventive measures to prevent the Corona virus. Those who were unable to benefit from the mammogram examination in these sites will be received in any of the Burjeel hospitals affiliated with the “VPS Group” in Abu Dhabi, and the mammogram reports will be processed in the VPS hospitals and sent to everyone.

Professor Humaid Al Shamsi, Director of Oncology Services at VPS Group and President of the Emirates Cancer Society, said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, “Last year, the chances of mammogram examination and demand for it were less due to the pandemic and the preventive measures applied, and some sick women were forced to postpone Their visit to the doctor while others avoided examination due to fears of catching the virus infection, and in the current year and in light of the return to normal life before the pandemic, we aim within the facilities of the “VBS” group, by re-launching the examination campaign to reach the entire population and create awareness about breast cancer And the possibility of early detection that raises the cure rate to more than 95%.

For his part, Dr. Ibrahim Hosni Abu Ghaida, Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Burjeel Medical City, told WAM: “Through the group’s initiatives, we aim to create awareness among the public, as breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women in the UAE, and the problem lies in the lack of Many people perceive or ignore the symptoms, so we aspire through our campaign to educate people and everyone should be aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. It is also important to note that breast cancer can affect males as well. As a health care provider in the UAE, we are obligated to serve the public, educate them and work for their own good.”
