There are more flowers in Yunnan.

Around Kunming Yangzonghai, the mountains and rivers are beautiful and the scenery is pleasant.

Thousands of species of Rosa, Hydrangea, and Southern Hemisphere woody flowers are planted in a planting base of more than 1,000 acres by the lake. Representative flower species will bloom in different seasons.

According to Yang Yuyong, the person in charge of the planting base, the base has introduced abundant plant germplasm resources and carried out cross-breeding on this basis, and independently developed new varieties. At present, the base has planted more than 2,400 species (variants) and varieties of 8 types of Rosa. There are more than 400 species of Hydrangea, as well as more than 100 species of Monarch and Auranthus native to South Africa and Australia.

“In the past, I planted and introduced rose varieties in Yunnan and sold them to Australia, Europe, Japan and other places, but I needed to pay a patent fee. Now, the new flower varieties I cultivated are planted and sold in EU countries, and other countries have to pay me patents. It's a waste." Yang Yuyong said proudly.

Data shows that as of 2020, Yunnan Province has independently cultivated more than 400 new flower varieties and introduced and promoted more than 600 new varieties. The number of new varieties introduced and independent research and development ranks first in China.

  Yunnan flowers should be fresh.

In a flower enterprise in Yiliang County, the roses picked from the greenhouse are continuously sent to the workshop. After the quality is checked by the staff, the flowers are expertly packaged and then shipped to all parts of China.

At any time of the year, the company can provide cut flower products with stable types, colors and specifications.

The secret of the company's ability to keep cut flowers fresh throughout the year lies in an automated greenhouse and cold storage system covering more than 280,000 square meters.

The system can be fully automatic and self-controllable to realize precise control of greenhouse irrigation, heating system, fertilizer water recovery, disinfection recycling and greenhouse climate system.

At present, the promotion of green and high-efficiency production technologies such as soilless cultivation, standardized post-harvest processing, and cold chain logistics systems have significantly improved the quality and benefits of flower products in Yunnan Province.

According to statistics, in 2020, the quality of fresh cut flowers in Yunnan, dominated by roses, will be further improved. The number of transactions of A-level and above flowers increased by 8.3% compared with the previous year, and the proportion increased by 1.83%. The average price of A-level high-quality flowers was 2.57 yuan/piece. This is an increase of 23% over the previous year.

Yunnan flowers must be able to cure diseases.

In autumn, when I walked into the Dai Medical Hospital of Xishuangbanna Prefecture, clusters of pink bamboo leaf orchids were in full bloom. This is a common antidote in Dai medicine and can be used to treat food poisoning, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Dai medicine, one of the four major ethnic medicines in China, has been inherited and developed for more than 2500 years.

There are many types and varieties of Dai medicine. There are more than 1,700 kinds of plant medicines in Xishuangbanna Prefecture alone.

Among them, there are many plants and flowers, such as the duckbill flower that can relieve swelling and pain, and the Huangmengui for clearing fire and detoxification.

Currently, Xishuangbanna Prefecture has formulated and promulgated standards for more than 100 Dai medicinal materials.

Dai medicine researchers have developed 43 preparations in Dai medicine hospitals, benefiting a wider range of patients.

Wang Jihua, deputy dean of the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that in order for the Yunnan flower industry to develop into a world-class flower industry, it must seize the historical opportunity of cutting-edge biotechnology to iteratively reconstruct the pattern of the global flower seed industry. At the same time, it must be good at making use of both international and domestic innovations.
