Earthquakes hit the area around La Palma volcano

Several relatively strong earthquakes hit again the area around the volcano of the Spanish island of La Palma, which erupted three weeks ago.

The RTVE news network reported that the strongest of these earthquakes was recorded just before midnight on Sunday (2300 GMT), with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale.

According to the responsible authorities in the Canary Islands, this is the strongest earthquake since the eruption of the volcano.

The tremors were felt by many of the 85,000 inhabitants of the island of La Palma.

The authorities said that since the earthquake occurred at a depth of 39 km below the surface of the earth, there is no cause for concern.

By Monday afternoon, there were at least 40 aftershocks.

Geological expert Neves Sanchez told the Spanish newspaper "El Pais" that the strongest earthquakes that occurred recently may be an indication of the formation of new lava under the volcano, which is located in Mount Cumbre Vieja, south of La Palma.
