At least six people were killed, and eleven injured, in a car bomb attack in Aden in southern Yemen on Sunday against a convoy of Yemeni officials.

The governor of Aden, Ahmed Lamlas, and the Minister of Agriculture, Salem al-Socotri, member of the Southern Transition Council (STC), who were notably on board the convoy, survived the attack, say the sources of security.

The second city of the country, Aden is the provisional capital of the Yemeni power at war since 2014 against the Houthis, the rebels who conquered much of the north of the country, including the capital Sanaa. The international community is trying in vain to reach a peaceful resolution of this conflict which has caused the worst humanitarian crisis in the world according to the UN. Almost 80% of the Yemeni population rely on humanitarian aid to survive. According to international organizations, tens of thousands of people have died in the conflict and millions have been displaced.

In this war, the unity government, which includes the separatist STC, is supported militarily by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia, Yemen's neighbor. The Houthis have the political backing of Iran, a regional rival to the Saudi kingdom. While the attack has not yet been claimed, several anti-government attacks have been attributed to the Houthi rebels in recent years. Others have been claimed by jihadist groups. After the attack, the Prime Minister, Maïn Abdelmalek Saïd, called for an investigation, denouncing a "cowardly terrorist" attack, according to the Saba agency.

Sunday's bombing is the bloodiest in Aden since a December 2020 attack on the city's airport, shortly after members of the new unity government landed, leaving at least 26 dead and more than 50 injured.

A United States envoy, Tim Lenderking, has launched a tour of countries in the region in an attempt to end the conflict, as the Houtis escalated fighting in an attempt to capture the town of Marib.
