  • Austria The Austrian Chancellor resigns before the ultimatum of his Government partners

The Austrian Government is rebuilding after the resignation of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, cornered by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office for his alleged involvement in crimes of fraud and bribery. His successor will be the hitherto Foreign Minister,

Alexander Schallenberg

, a career diplomat with little political experience, a close ally of Kurz and, like him, very tough on immigration. Schallenberg has already met with the leader of the Greens and vice chancellor,

Werner Kogler

, and today he did the same with the head of state,

Alexander Van der Bellen.

After his interview with the president, Schallenberg said he had

a "huge challenge ahead that will not be easy for anyone"

and highlighted "the incredible degree of responsibility" that the country has shown. For his part, Kogler congratulated himself on "the possibility of opening a new chapter in the work of the coalition government", thereby ending the crisis.

The continuity of the coalition

between the People's Party (ÖVP) and the Greens

is thus assured

, and that was, apparently, Kurz's priority, that of the politician who puts the good of the country before his personal interests. Austrian analysts, however, see Kurz's move as a medium and long-term strategy. His maneuver even reminds some commentators of those of Russian President

Vladimir Putin

, who gave way to

Dmitry Medvedev

only to regain command. That is the thesis defended by the daily

Kronen Zeitung

in an editorial, that of

a Kurz who only considers leaving office for a limited time

.

And he does it as only a chancellor who aspires to be one can do it again: avoiding the motion of censure that the opposition announced for Tuesday and which he would surely have lost.

Without Kurz's departure, the Greens would have supported the motion given the seriousness of the crimes for which the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WkStA) has opened an investigation against him and his closest circle.

He is accused of having used criminal methods to gain control of his party and later the government.

He did so, apparently, since he entered the Government as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2016,

financing the media in exchange for favorable editorials.

and embellished surveys. The method, as editor-in-chief of various Austrian newspapers have recalled, is not new. Kurz has not been the first and will not be the last political leader to be served through articles and paid advertising in the media to gain popularity and shore up his influence. Kurz's problem is that, allegedly, he did not invest in his future with his pocket, but with funds from taxpayers, through the Ministry of Finance. The documents in the possession of the Prosecutor's Office collect payments to the Austria media group, the most important in the country,

of up to 1.3 million euros.

In addition to his closest collaborators, the former Family Minister, the sociologists

Sophie Karmasin and Sabine Beinschab

and the brothers

Hubert and Wolgang Fellner,

owners of Media Group Austria

, participated in the supposed operation of Kurz's rise to power

. This media conglomerate includes, among others, the free daily

Österreich

, the television channel o224.tv, economic and women's magazines, as well as a network of radio stations. Together they are the largest communication group in Austria and

one of the worst reputed for its sensationalism.

Kurz has defended the presumption of innocence in the 72 hours that elapsed since the Prosecutor's Office proceeded to search the Chancellery, the Ministry of Finance and the headquarters of the ÖVP until his resignation. The pressure, however, was untenable even for Kurz.

He had two options: resign and save himself from burning or go to the parliamentary slaughterhouse

. He chose to resign because it allows him to retire without leaving. Kurz remains the leader of the ÖVP, maintains the Government and maintains his power and visibility by calling himself head of the parliamentary group. He has in his hand all the tools to, from the shadows, move the strings in the Government.

The leader of the Social Democratic opposition,

Pamela Rendi-Wagner

, has no doubts that this will be the case.

"Kurz leaves the Chancellery, but he will remain, in the shadow, the Chancellor," "Rendi-Wagner declared. Shadow power, like

Jaroslaw Kazcynski

at the head of the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) in Poland, like Putin in Russia, despite all the distances.

The parallel of the Austrian media with Putin is interesting.

Putin went from being president to prime minister Medvedev in 2008-2012, before returning to the presidency.

A leaked US diplomatic cable at the time said

Medvedev "plays Robin for Putin's Batman."

Kurz has not mentioned a time limit for his departure from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as that will depend on the time the Prosecutor's Office needs to determine with evidence whether, indeed, he falsified surveys and bought a reputation in the media with public money, because that is the True problem.

Kurz announced his resignation in a seven-minute speech, of which more than half were to reiterate his innocence and explain that he was leaving the government because of responsibility to the country.

It was a consensual decision with the powerful regional leaders of the ÖVP

and among them

Günther Platter

, head of the Tyrolean Government.

According to Platter, it was the right decision.

The chancellor had to step aside until the accusations against him are clarified, "he stressed. Kurz will return.
