Only after many hospital visits for recurring problems with pain in the foot and elbow were blood samples taken from the child which showed that he had suffered from haemophilia.

The health service also made a report of concern.

It appears that the child became frightened after all hospital visits and needed to be put to sleep during the examination.

Delayed care

IVO believes that the late diagnosis led to delayed care and that the risk of severe bleeding increased.

They believe that the care has been active and taken treatment such as X-rays and plaster casts, but that they should have investigated the underlying causes of the pain earlier.

IVO is also critical of the fact that the family was not asked to seek emergency medical care earlier when the child had complications after an entrance in the arm.

It turned out to be an unusual complication with bulging blood vessels.

Can be followed up

The care provider must take IVO's decision into account in its continued work with patient safety.

IVO may follow up on how care providers work in the future with measures for the shortcomings.
