Troika calls for an end to the blockade of the port in eastern Sudan

The United States, Britain and Norway called on Friday for an end to the blockade of the port and transport infrastructure in eastern Sudan.

"Political leaders in eastern Sudan should accept their government's offer to solve their problems through concrete political dialogue, rather than engage in actions that will do nothing but damage the country's economy," the three countries said in a joint statement.

This comes after the opposition in eastern Sudan threatened to escalate its movements to include all national roads, vital institutions and ports.

The protesters in the east believe that their "demands are just", criticizing the "marginalization" of their regions.

The Sudanese Transitional Council of Ministers had confirmed in a previous statement that the issue of eastern Sudan was a "just issue and a top national priority, and that the solution to the file is a political solution in the first place."

The government warned of the "repercussions of closing Port Sudan's port and national roads, which would disrupt the country's development path and harm the interests of all."

Eastern Sudan includes three states: the Red Sea, Kassala, and Gedaref. It is considered strategic because it borders Eritrea, Egypt and Ethiopia, and has a coastline on the Red Sea about 500 km long, and there are oil ports on it.
