The first direct meeting between the Taliban and US officials in Doha

A delegation from the Taliban movement headed by its foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaki, held a meeting with a high-level US delegation in Doha, the minister announced on Saturday.

In an interview with the Afghan Bakhtar News Agency, Mottaki said that the Taliban delegation requested during the meeting that the United States cancel the decisions to freeze the country's assets.

The United States froze assets of Afghanistan estimated at nine billion dollars after the Taliban takeover of the country in August.

The move led to a severe currency shortage, as well as a sharp rise in the prices of basic foodstuffs and fuel.

"No effort should be made to weaken the current government, as instability in Afghanistan will not benefit anyone," Mottaki said.

Mottaki added that the Taliban delegation also requested humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, and the US delegation said that Washington would discuss the matter.

This is the first direct meeting between the Taliban and US officials since the armed group took over the country.

Mottaki stated that the US delegation pledged to continue supporting the vaccination program against Covid 19, in Afghanistan.
