35-year-old Sebastian Kurz announced on Saturday that he chooses to resign as Federal Chancellor, after corruption allegations against him threw the country into a political crisis.

The message comes after demands from the coalition party Miljöpartiet De gröna demanded his resignation.

The Kurz party, the center-conservative Austrian People's Party ÖPV, has, however, joined its leader before today's announcement of his resignation.

Kurz proposes that Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg take over his place for the time being.

Kurz himself will instead become head of the Austrian People's Party's parliamentary group.
