A total of 329 people and 95 organizations have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021.

Last year, the prize went to the UN's food program WFP, for the fight against hunger and hunger.

On Friday morning, Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, will present this year's winner directly from Oslo.

The election of Nobel Peace Prize winners has often been free of controversy.

In a number of cases, a laureate has been appointed in the midst of ongoing peace processes, which ultimately did not lead to the outcome committee and many others had hoped for.

The latest example is Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was rewarded for the peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Ahmed received the award in 2019, but the following year he ordered a military offensive against the Tigrean Liberation Front (TPLF) in Tigray province in northern Ethiopia.

The conflict has resulted in an ongoing famine for large sections of Tigray's population.
