08 October 2021 Interior ministers from 12 member countries ask the European Commission to finance the construction of walls at the border to block the entry of migrants arriving from Belarus.

In a letter dated 7 October and quoted by the EU Observer, ministers write: "Physical barriers appear to be an effective protective measure that serves the interests of the entire EU, not just the member countries of first arrival. This legitimate measure should be financed in an additional and adequate way through the EU budget as an urgent matter ".

The 4-page letter sent to EU Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas and Internal Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson is signed by the ministers of Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia.
