A magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred in the metropolitan area of Japan, resulting in injuries and other damages.

Local media such as NHK reported that an earthquake estimated to be 5.9 on the Richter scale occurred in the northwestern part of Chiba Prefecture, Japan at 10:41 last night (7th).

It is the first time in about 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 that strong tremors of magnitude 5 or higher have been observed in the 23 wards of Tokyo.

About 30 people were injured in the earthquake, and damage to facilities followed.

The light rail went off the track during an emergency stop, and a water pipe ruptured, causing a manhole to flow back and overflowing the roadside.

As public transportation services were suddenly stopped, citizens, including office workers, had difficulty returning home until dawn.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that another earthquake of a similar magnitude could occur within the next week.
