A man appeared before the criminal court of Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d'Armor) on Tuesday for a serious traffic accident that occurred in 2019. One evening, he had run over a 16-year-old young man on a bicycle.

The teenager had remained unconscious, between life and death, while the alcoholic motorist had fled.

The driver had returned to his parents, and his father had forced him to return to the scene of the tragedy.

He was then arrested by the gendarmes who had noted a rate of 1.02 grams of alcohol.

A modified sentence

The cyclist had meanwhile been evacuated to Rennes University Hospital.

He had remained in a coma for 19 days and would now suffer from serious after-effects, as he explained to the bar of the court.

The young man would have recurrent loss of concentration and memory.

"I acted like a coward", for his part recognized the defendant who had already lost several points on his driving license at the time of the facts.

He was sentenced to eighteen months in prison, twelve of which were suspended.

The firm sentence will be arranged under electronic surveillance.

A new hearing is scheduled for next May to set the amount of damages.
