Three months before the renewal of Monusco's mandate, the UN is worried about the humanitarian situation which is deteriorating, according to it, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

One in three Congolese depends on aid, but it still cannot be distributed properly due to the security situation.

The food insecurity of the Congolese was at the center of discussions yesterday at the Security Council at the UN.

The fifteen members met to assess the situation in the DRC and the possible adaptation needs of the peacekeeping force.

Food insecurity

But first of all, Bintou Keita, the new UN representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was concerned about the precariousness of the humanitarian situation: 29% of the population suffers from food insecurity.

The situation is even more complicated in the east of the country, in Ituri in particular.

Attacks on schools and hospitals and the large number of displaced people have increased needs, but access constraints and the risk of insecurity continue to hamper aid distribution operations.

Increase contributions

Bintou Keita called on member states to increase their contributions to the humanitarian response plan.

The association Voix de femmes congolaises has asked for a strengthening of the MONUSCO intervention brigade in the east.

The sanctions committee in charge of the DRC will, for its part, observe the proper application of the sanctions on the spot in early November.
