Armin Laschet has put aside any ambiguity.

The Union Chancellor candidate began the joint press conference with the Green Party leadership on Tuesday with the comment: “For us, it is again important that the CDU did not win the election.

We are in second place, CDU and CSU. ”There was no longer any claim to form a government, Laschet only spoke of several possibilities for forming a government.

The exchange with the Greens, which could be the preliminary stage to Jamaica explorations, was "good," he said.

“We believe that such an alliance is broad in society.” But the CDU chairman immediately added that the decision as to whether this would come about did not lie with the Union.

It would be worthwhile to deepen the talks, "but the FDP and the Greens will decide whether that works."

The Union is ready.

Söder: Need to talk about migration

Markus Söder, the CSU chairman, also found words of praise for the Greens.

The talks were "just as or even more exciting" than those with the FDP - although the Free Democrats, in contrast to the Greens, had always asserted their close proximity to the Union in terms of content.

It is "a lot of brain teaser for everyone involved to further develop the future".

Söder spoke of the will to explore "which bridges can be tread together, how far the paths then possibly are and how stable are the pillars on which this path is to be covered". Although all parties had agreed not to disclose the content of the talks, Söder also mentioned topics: When it comes to climate protection, they have "come closer to each other". In other areas, however, there is still a lot of discussion to be done, for example on the subject of migration. "If everyone were willing to approach each other, I think there would be great opportunities to continue such a conversation."

The green party chairmen Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck reacted to this charm offensive with aloof friendliness.

The discussions were "constructive and objective", marked by "seriousness", said Baerbock.

When it comes to socio-political issues, they are further apart, and when it comes to digitization, they are closer together.

Habeck also spoke of possible intersections that have been explored, as well as of divisions.

When asked whether or not there will be a sequel, the Greens remained non-binding.

That will be discussed on Tuesday and Wednesday in the green committees and in the exploratory team, said Baerbock.

This is how the FDP will handle it.

Then we'll see.

The Union, so the message, must wait and hope.

How should one convey the green base of Jamaica?

The Greens have no interest in giving the talks an early cancellation, if only to drive up the price of the negotiations with the Social Democrats. It is just as clear that the so-called traffic light with the SPD and FDP is closer to them than a Jamaica alliance. Even with the Greens, who had preferred a Jamaica alliance before the election, there are now doubts as to whether this is still the right decision, quite apart from the question of how it should be conveyed to the green base.

Greens don't like to talk about this in public, preferring to talk about the unresolved question of power in the Union.

The Greens have been questioning whether the Union is negotiable for days.

The fact that information from the talks between the Union and the FDP got into the Bild newspaper was just an additional argument.

Federal Managing Director Michael Kellner said on Tuesday morning on RTL: "The fact that communication is then carried out via the Bild newspaper does not cast a good light on the conditions in the Union." That had already "seriously irritated the Greens," said Kellner.

The Green politician Cem Özdemir also spoke of a “sign of internal leadership problems”.

Laschet said on Tuesday that it was “not good”, but he would rather talk about the “huge tasks” that have to be tackled.
