Four incoming planes had to be diverted to other airports.

The authorities called on the residents of the town on Mount Etna to stay in their homes.

On Monday, the coastal region of Savona experienced the heaviest rain in its history, causing mudslides and floods.

This led to the suspension of road and train services.
