The powerful explosion in central Gothenburg is being investigated as a general destruction.

Exactly what caused the explosion is unclear, but police do not believe it was due to "natural causes".

This year alone, the police have investigated a long series of similar incidents.

In explosions that criminals are behind, so-called civilian explosives are often used.

These are explosives intended for use in, for example, construction sites and in the mining industry, but which according to the expert Dan Loyd are too easy to get over for criminals, for example through theft.

He also points out that it is easier for criminals to escape after an explosion than after a shooting.

- The charge and detonator often weigh no more than a few kilos, so you transport it in a bag and put it in place.

You can then trigger it when you yourself are at a safe distance.

It is also more difficult to trace what happened in an explosion than in a shooting, there is not much left to investigate from the charge afterwards, says Dan Loyd, who is professor emeritus in energy technology at Linköping University.

Here are some of the explosions in recent months in Sweden:

May 6, Malmö

Three powerful explosions took place in Malmö in less than an hour during the night until 6 May.

Police believe the explosions may have a connection.

- It is relatively heavy charges that have exploded, said Stefan Sintéus, police area chief in Malmö.
