54-year-old Yannick Jadot now has the challenge of bringing together environmentalists that the first round had roughly divided into four blocks.

He must also impose his candidacy within a left already well endowed with aspiring presidents, from the rebellious Jean-Luc Mélenchon to the socialist mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo via the former minister Arnaud Montebourg and the communist Fabien Roussel.

In the first round of the primary, Yannick Jadot came out on top with 27.70% of the votes, against 25.14% for Sandrine Rousseau, 22.32% for Delphine Batho, 22.29% for Eric Piolle and 2.35% to Jean-Marc Governatori.
