"Keep up, go outside, accelerate, surpass..." On the training ground in Nanjing, the Taiwanese roller skating coach Su Junfeng of the "post-80s" is instructing the local "roller skating doll" to train and run laps in an orderly manner.

In 2016, Nanjing was awarded the title of "World Roller Skating Capital" and the Nanjing Speed Roller Skating Team was established.

In the same year, Junfeng Su was invited to Nanjing and embarked on his continental roller skating dream journey.

In the past five years, from the "roller skating doll" to the speed roller skating "student army", the Nanjing speed roller skating team has grown from nothing, from small to large, and the construction of all levels of echelon is complete.

As the head coach, Junfeng Su led the team to win 37 gold medals in the National Roller Skating Championships and Open, breaking two national records.

After the joint recommendation of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Qinhuai District of Nanjing City and the District Sports Bureau, on May 4, 2017, Junfeng Su was named the first "Ten Outstanding Youth in Qinhuai District".

"We went from an obscure city speed skating team to a place in the national championship. This difficult process is only known to those who participated in it." Su Junfeng said with emotion.

In the words of Su Junfeng, the members of these roller skating teams are all his children.

He said, "I have been with this team for five years, just like my own child, watching him thrive, and now he has achieved so many results, I feel very relieved."

Su Junfeng became acquainted with roller skating since childhood.

In the third grade of elementary school, Su Junfeng chose roller skating as a physical training course and kept practicing.

After graduation, Junfeng Su worked as a coach in Yilan, Taiwan, playing the "outpost" of his coaching career.

In 2016, Su Junfeng, who was resting at home, received a call and invited him to go to Nanjing to lead the team.

"I'm 35 years old, I went to another city, everything started from scratch." This call made him hesitate. After two days of thinking about it, Su Junfeng decided to challenge himself and go to Nanjing to promote roller skating and make a career.

Before coming to the mainland, Junfeng Su would inevitably be a little anxious and had various ideas.

After stepping into this land, he realized that the previous worries were completely unnecessary, and there was no pressure and barriers in life in Nanjing.

"Nanjing is an ancient capital full of history and culture, as well as a modern and civilized city. The Nanjing people I deal with are very kind and get along very friendly." Su Junfeng said with a smile.

Su Junfeng said that in the past five years, he has worked and lived smoothly in the mainland, and the local Taiwan Affairs Office has given a lot of help.

He said, “During the prevention and control of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the Taiwan Affairs Office assisted us to go to Nanjing Red Cross Hospital for vaccination. In the future, the Taiwan Affairs Office will set up a Taiwan Youth Office in the Qinhuai Sports Center as a place for Taiwanese youth to start business exchanges in Nanjing.”

In the face of the sudden new crown epidemic, physical education courses cannot gather training offline.

Su Junfeng moved the classroom to “on the cloud” and asked parents to cooperate and strengthen training through videos to maintain physical activity.

In addition, to ensure safety, the roller skating team also added road training.

On April 7, 2020, the Nanjing roller skating team voluntarily organized a fundraising activity and used its own practical actions to support the resumption of class and training in Tieshan District, Huangshi City, Hubei Province.

A total of 91 people from Nanjing Speed Skating Team and Qinhuai District Speed Skating Team’s management team, coaches and athletes participated in the fund-raising activities. They gave their love and raised a total of RMB 10,205.

In Su Junfeng's view, speed roller skating training can cultivate a brave and tenacious character, which is of great benefit to nurturing children's sportsmanship and learning and living.

"We are not afraid of encountering difficulties. We just grit our teeth to challenge, face, and solve. This is the biggest gain for the entire training team."

Many children cannot take care of themselves when they first arrive on the roller skating team. Parents must help them to tie shoelaces and wear protective gear.

Su Junfeng said, "We will persuade parents to give care to the children when they are training. Let the children learn slowly and accomplish these things independently."

Su Junfeng said that he is very optimistic about the development prospects of Nanjing speed roller skating.

At present, more than 50 primary and middle schools in Nanjing have brought roller skating to their campuses.

As one of the venues where Su Junfeng leads the students’ daily training, Guanghua East Street Primary School established a Nanjing speed roller skating training base and included roller skating in the school’s characteristic school-based curriculum, and established school teams and speed roller skating teams, and then transported them to the Nanjing speed roller skating team. The echelon conducts intensive training.

Looking forward to the future, Su Junfeng said frankly that he will work hard to promote speed roller skating from Nanjing, the city of roller skating, to popularize it on the mainland.
