Business Danone was born in El Raval
The Kings have started their agenda this Monday in Lisbon with the inauguration of the world's first center dedicated to the
research and treatment of pancreatic cancer
, the most deadly and difficult to diagnose. The
Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Center
has come into operation thanks to the
generous donation
of one of the richest couples in Spain.
Mauricio
Botton
(88) and his wife,
Carlota,
have spent
50 million euros
to build the center that is destined to become the world benchmark in the fight against this type of cancer. Together with the Kings, the Bottons toured the facilities accompanied by the President of Portugal,
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa,
the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, and the tenor Josep Carreras, among others.
The Bottons are not as well known as other great Spanish millionaires, but Mauricio is ranked 111 on the list of the richest in the country, with an estimated fortune of
455 million euros.
The millions of this businessman born in Paris in the
bosom of a Sephardic family,
come from his maternal grandfather,
Isaac Carasso
,
founder in 1919 of Danone,
who was the first to market yogurt.

The only child of Jeanne Carasso
, one of Isaac Carasso's two daughters, Mauricio was for 40 years head of R&D and quality at Danone Spain where he enjoyed prestige and is credited with a decisive role in the
design and launch of Actimel
, one of Danone's successes in recent years. In 2015, he sold his last shares in Danone Spain, where he was a director for decades, to the French parent that controlled the company and retired with a large fortune that had grown after the sale of the assets.
He then started several business ventures through his
Germina Gestión
estate
in different sectors such as real estate businesses and
olive oil
and derivative products that he marketed under the
Finca La Gramanosa
, Zumo, Carlota and Mas Notari
brands
from his 300-hectare estate in
Avinyonet. del Penedès
, a town of just 1,700 inhabitants that became the
second richest town in Spain
, behind Pozuelo de Alarcón, thanks to its illustrious neighbor who declared his taxes there. Oil is one of the passions of the businessman, along with art and literature. "I am convinced that I make the best extra virgin olive oil in Spain," he told the newspaper

In 2019, however, Mauricio and Carlota, who have no children,
decided to leave Catalonia after the 1-O referendum,
put the farm up for sale and
live between Madrid and Paris.
Now, in addition, they have their eyes on Portugal, where they have transferred part of their investments.
In the Alentejo region they continue with the
production of the oil
together with their partner Palolo Miceli, CEO of La Gramanosa.
The donation to the
Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Center
is not the only one that the Spanish businessman and his wife have made to works for social purposes.
Both are part of the board of the
Germina Foundation
, which works with
children, young people and families in vulnerable situations
in Barcelona and will also open its doors in Madrid.
They are also an active part of the
Hispanic Jewish Foundation
, whose objective is to recover the history of the Jewish roots of Spain and Latin America.
