The two former prime ministers, Ahmed Ouyahia and Abdelmalek Sellal, under former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, were sentenced to prison on charges of corruption, according to local media.
The court of Sidi M'hamed sentenced Ouyahia to six years in prison and Sellal to five years in a case in which other figures are being prosecuted on charges including "money laundering", "wasting money", "exploiting the position" and "concluding deals that violate the legislation", according to private television stations, An-Nahar. "Sunrise" and "Life".
The verdicts were handed down in the case of Hamid Melzi, the former director of a public hotel company and of a public authority that ran a luxury residence usually reserved for dignitaries, who was sentenced to five years in prison.
Melzi is accused in another case of economic espionage and harming the national economy.
Ouyahia served as prime minister four times between 1995 and 2019, while Sellal held the position between 2014 and 2017, and ran the four electoral campaigns of Bouteflika, who was ousted from power in 2019 and died on September 17 of this year.
The judiciary had previously convicted the two former prime ministers in several cases of corruption, and they must appear in other cases.
