September 26, 2021 From 7 to 20, citizens of the Republic of San Marino vote for the historic referendum for the decriminalization of abortion.

The tiny enclave, with a strong Catholic tradition, is one of the last states in Europe - along with Malta, Andorra and the Vatican - to ban abortion altogether.

Abortion is today a crime punishable by up to three years of imprisonment for the woman and six years for the doctor who performs it.

But in fact there have never been convictions because San Marino women go to Italy to have an abortion, thus evading the law.

Strong resistance to the legalization of abortion, starting with the ruling Christian Democratic Party, which asked to vote "no" to "defend the right to life".
