The more than 3,000 shark fins were found in five boxes at Bogota's largest airport, El Dorado.

The fins are estimated to come from at least three different species and from a thousand sharks up to five meters.

According to Colombian Environment Minister Carolina Urrutia, the sharks have probably been fished illegally and she condemns "the irreversible damage that fishing has to Colombia's marine ecosystem".

The demand for shark fins in Hong Kong is still high, despite the fact that consumption there now requires a special license.

The fins are often served cooked during weddings and they are also considered in traditional Chinese medicine to be blood purifying and rejuvenating.

Colombian police are now investigating shark fishing, which has been banned in the country since 2020.
