The owners are a Danish retired couple who were not on the island at the time of the volcanic eruption.

They had chosen to get a house on La Palma precisely because of the volcanic landscape.

- We cried like crazy when I told them that their beloved house remained, says Ada Monnikendam, who built the house, to El Mundo.

But more than half of the houses, including the school in El Paraíso, have been destroyed in the volcanic eruption.

The retired couple Inge and Rainer Cocq tell Ekstrabladet that they have a hard time understanding why their particular house was spared.

- A lava foot like this has such an unimaginable force, it is impossible to understand why the lava flow stopped at our house, says Rainer Cocq.

On Friday afternoon, firefighters were forced to withdraw from the town of Todoque after a new opening on the volcano erupted.

“The volcano is in a new explosive phase.

The fire brigade will not continue to work today ", tweeted Tenerife's rescue service which was deployed to help at La Palma.
