In 2019, 1875 bicycles were stolen in Lund according to the Emergency Prevention Council's statistics and Lund ended up in third place among the worst affected places in Sweden.

In 2020, that number fell by just over 200 fewer bicycle thefts, despite the fact that bicycle thefts are increasing in the country as a whole.

And the downward trend in Lund continues this year as well.

- So far this year, we have the lowest figure for corresponding periods since 2017, says Joakim Nyberg, municipal police in Lund.

Safer bicycle rack

According to him, it is the new bicycle places, with a better opportunity to lock the bicycle, and guards at the central station in Lund that have reduced the number of thefts.

- In addition, we regularly inspect those who shop for bicycles.

If there are stolen bicycles in their warehouse, we seize them and investigate the ownership.

Many affected

Even though the number of thefts is falling, Lund is hard hit.

- I have gotten rid of the bike at least five or six times during my 20 years here in Lund, says Anna Hansson.

Many bicycle thefts remain unsolved.

- But of course we have a person in custody on suspicion of a number of bicycle thefts and receiving, says Joakim Nyberg.
