The UAE reviews its experience in formulating a model for the global transformation of the food system

Maryam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Al Muhairi, Minister of State for Food and Water Security, participated in the United Nations Food Systems Summit 2021, which was held virtually today at the United Nations Headquarters, on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During her speech, Maryam Al Muhairi stressed the importance of mobilizing the efforts of the world's countries to eradicate hunger by 2030, explaining that there is no time left to plan until 2030, which is the time frame set by the United Nations as a "decade of action", stressing that the joint efforts of all actors Essential for the world, to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular the second goal, which is to eradicate hunger.

She said: "It is clear that the scale of the task - facing the global community in achieving the goal of ending hunger by 2030 - is great. As a result of COVID-19, it is important that all stakeholders, including governments, NGOs and individuals, join forces to accelerate the transformation of food systems, which is essential to get the world back on the right track in this framework.”

During the summit, Al Muhairi reviewed the UAE's national path to transforming food systems, and how it can contribute with the international community to achieving the second goal of eradicating hunger, through its commitment to reshaping the country's food security file by employing technology and innovation to achieve sustainability, and establishing a pioneering model that can Other countries follow it.

She added: "In support of the 2030 Agenda, the United Arab Emirates has established an integrated national pathway to transform food systems, aimed at achieving national food security goals, along with achieving sustainable development goals, and we derive our strategy for this transformation from the "UAE Vision 2021" and " The National Food Security Strategy 2051, “through which our country aims to be a global leader in the field of food security based on innovation during the next thirty years.”

She said: "Our national food security strategy includes five strategic objectives, including strengthening food supply chains, promoting innovation in the entire food value chain, reducing food waste and loss, ensuring its safety, as well as mitigating risks and food crises, noting that the goal is long. The scope of the strategy goes beyond the time frame of the Sustainable Development Goals, but we have already laid solid foundations for initiatives that will bear fruit within the next ten years.”

Maryam Al Muhairi added: “Although the Covid-19 pandemic has been a great challenge for humanity, it has also been a powerful catalyst for positive change, as the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of technology in business, and pushed companies to technological transformation to change the way they work, so the world must seize This opportunity to bring about the same transformative change in his diets.”

She concluded her speech by highlighting the mechanism followed by the UAE to launch the "Food Technology Valley" project, which aims to triple food production in the country, by adopting and implementing the latest technologies across the food value chain, and explained how the project uses the latest modern agricultural technologies to produce More than 300 types of crops, as the project represents the future of food in the country.

The 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit is part of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, which will be held during its 76th session, from 14-30 September in New York.

The Summit was convened by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as a platform for new and ambitious actions and innovative solutions within the required transformation of food systems, to achieve the second goal of the Sustainable Development Goals of Zero Hunger, which is necessary to support the other sustainable development goals.

The summit aims to pave the way for the transformation of global food systems, in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
