Northvolt has applied for a permit to expand the planned battery recycling plant in Skellefteå.

The company wants to increase recycling from 25,000 tonnes to 125,000 tonnes of batteries per year.

The idea is to build two more facilities, in addition to the previously planned, in connection with the battery factory itself.

This is because there is an increased need for recycling of battery waste.

- The expansion means that we can make use of even more raw materials that can then be returned to the battery production on Northvolt One.

We have very high ambitions for the use of recycled materials in our battery production, says Emma Nehrenheim, environmental manager at Northvolt.

Recycle external batteries

The plants must be able to recycle materials from both external and own batteries as well as production waste from the manufacturing process.

- The metals needed for cathode production go back into battery production, while other materials are sent on to local recycling operators, says Emma Nehrenheim.

Production start for the new parts of the recycling plant is expected to take place in 2025.
