The climate issue was one of the issues in focus when Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) gave a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday.

Löfven pointed out how the summer's extreme weather with forest fires, floods and heat waves has clarified the need for change.

He also said that the recovery from the pandemic now provides an opportunity for green transition.

- We must listen to science and change society.

We must keep the 1.5-degree target alive, Löfven said in the speech, among other things.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently said that it would be impossible to limit warming to 1.5 degrees unless immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in emissions were made.

- It will have catastrophic consequences for people and the planet on which we depend, he said in a statement in connection with the release of a new UN climate report last week.
