An Israeli policeman was killed and another injured, Tuesday, in a run-over accident in the northern city of Nahariya, according to local media, while the Israeli police opened an investigation into the accident.

In a statement, the Israeli police said that it had received a report that a police officer and a volunteer were run over at a checkpoint on Route 4.

She added that the policeman and the volunteer were seriously injured, and were transferred to the Galilee Medical Center in the coastal city of Nahariya (north).

She pointed out that the circumstances of the accident were still under investigation, before the Israeli channel 12 (private) announced that one of the policemen had died of serious injuries sustained in the accident.

The channel indicated that the background of the run-over has not been determined.

Later, the Israeli police reported that the driver of the car that caused the accident was arrested after chasing him in cooperation with the traffic police.

In a statement, it said that the arrested driver is a resident of the city of Araba, an Arab city in northern Israel.

She added that survey and combing activities are continuing to monitor other suspects.
