An 82-year-old man staying in Bandol (Var) would have tried to kill himself on September 12, after being targeted by an online scam, reports

Var-Matin

.

He was the recipient of a false e-mail from the brigade for the protection of minors in which he was summoned to respond to accusations of child pornography, pedophilia, exhibitionism and cyberpornography.

Shocked and panicked, the octogenarian cleared the second floor.

He suffers from multiple fractures, but above all, his psychological state has deteriorated significantly.

“He is in terrible shape and, according to his wife, this story has totally devastated him.

He no longer wants to fight, ”Sanary commissioner told the Var daily.

A widespread phishing technique

The false letter comes from a certain Christophe Molmy, "divisional commissioner and head of the brigade for the protection of minors", specifies the daily. It indicates to the recipient that it is the subject of several legal proceedings, which can be avoided by providing supporting documents by means of a link at the end of the email. Otherwise, the scammer promises that an arrest warrant will be issued and that the recipient will be registered in the sex offender file and posted in the public space for their Internet use.

In reality, the email link causes the trapped person to fork out money.

A phishing technique increasingly used by online crooks.

An investigation entrusted to the brigade for the repression of delinquency against the person (BRDP) was even opened by the Paris prosecutor's office this year, revealed in February the magazine

Le Point

.

The police, like the gendarmes of Seine-Maritime, regularly alert on this attempted fraud.
