September 19, 2021 Italians are last in Europe in the use of social networks.

To dispel a perception that sees us focused on publishing posts continuously is Eurostat in its "Regional yearbook 2021 edition".

The data, however, is not linked to a cultural change but mainly to the delay in connection, especially in some areas.

Turkey is better than us too, a country that is not exactly tender with the Internet and social networks.

Eurostat data certify that more than half of the adult population in the EU area (57%) has participated in social networks. The participation rate for young people aged between 16 and 24 (87%) was almost four times higher than the rate corresponding to seniors aged between 65 and 74 (22%). However, it is emphasized that during the last five years (2015-2020 for which data are available) the share of young people participating in social networks has changed little or nothing. Conversely, the percentage of older people using these platforms has almost doubled over the same period.

In the ranking, Italy is the nation with the lowest participation in social networks, 48%. In first place is Iceland (94%), followed by Norway (88%) and Denmark (85%). The large differences in social media participation rates are partly related to whether or not people are connected to the Internet, in areas that Eurostat defines as "predominantly rural or outermost regions". In the case of Italy they are the South and the Islands.
