Child crashed from balcony, man arrested for murder

September 19, 2021 An attempt is made to shed light on the tragedy of little Samuele who died in Naples falling from the balcony of his home in via Foria last Friday.

An investigation is underway for the murder of a family domestic worker, now in custody. The investigators are focused on the dynamic still to be clarified of the tragic fact that sees the protagonist Mariano Cannio, 38, with a clean but psychically disturbed and with a dark past.

Destroyed by pain, the Gargiulos, parents of the almost 4-year-old child, are now asking the press for maximum respect for privacy. The mother asks for 'mercy' for her baby, and asks not to publish his photographs.

Last night on social media there was a video in which little Samuele repeats the phrase "I throw you down". It first appeared on Tik Tok, and was later shared on other social networks.

"Please do not publish any more photographs of my son, nor videos": is the painful appeal to TV and print media by Carmela Gargiulo, present in the house, but in another room, during the tragedy.

The video is being examined by investigators to establish any links with what happened. Words the child may have repeated after hearing them spoken by an adult. Like those pronounced shortly after: "Because you are a" lota "" (derogatory dialect term, ed). The video ends with Samuele who suddenly no longer speaks,  as if not to be listened to by someone to whom he turns his gaze.

Outside the house, a large group of acquaintances of the family positioned themselves 'to guard' the building, to prevent too much curious from approaching, and there would also have been a heated argument with some journalists which made it necessary for the intervention of the police. Two patrols then remained in garrison to calm the spirits and restore order. Someone has also posted a sign inviting journalists and onlookers, out of respect for the pain, not to arrive on a pilgrimage.

Immediately after the incident, the agents of the Naples Mobile Squad found Cannio at his home where he allegedly only partially admitted his responsibilities. He said that he was present in the house, that he saw Samuele and also that he took him in his arms, but that he did not throw him into the void. He doesn't really explain whether or not it was an accident, but he says he wasn't the one who killed him.

Defended by a lawyer, Cannio is in prison, being watched pending the hearing to validate the arrest that will be held on Monday morning. The man is well known in the neighborhood and many families rely on his services as a servant and 'handyman'. He would have the keys to the apartments of several families in the area.

Today during the homily for the celebration of San Gennaro, the archbishop of Naples, Monsignor Domenico Battaglia, reported that he had gone last night to the home of Samuele's parents. "I have before my eyes the pain of his parents - said Battaglia - I felt the need to embrace Carmen and Giuseppe. I stop for a moment - he added, addressing the faithful in the Cathedral - because this morning I ask all of you for these parents, young people, a prayer, they need this prayer and our closeness ".
