"I pay for sex, but I'm not a beast"

(Galati, Romania, 1984).

Speaker, writer, activist for the abolition of prostitution and former victim of human trafficking for sexual exploitation.

He has just published

The Revolt of the Whores

(Sine Qua Non).

I read in his book: "Spain is the largest consumer of prostitution in Europe: four out of 10 men are whores". What a record ... Yes, we have that terrible record and we should be very ashamed: Spain is the largest consumer of prostitution in Europe and the third in the world. That has to do with different factors. In the first place, Spain is a transit country for trafficking networks, but also a destination country for sexual exploitation, since it is the gateway to Europe for countries in the global south, Latin America and Africa. And to that is added that the economy of Spain is focused on the service sector, so the great demand for prostitution by local men is added that of tourists, because Spain has already become a tourist destination of sexual exploitation. How is it possible? It is possible because the legislation allows all this, because not all forms of pimping are prosecuted, because there are no campaigns to discourage the demand for prostitution, because boys are not educated in ethics and the good treatment of women, in that they are not to reify us, dehumanize us, commercialize us. But all that is now in the spotlight, because if we aspire to truly live in a democratic society we would also have to think about the poorest and most vulnerable women on the planet who end up being sexually exploited in our country. Prostitution, according to the Sociological Research Center, is not an issue that worries Spaniards. The political parties don't talk about it.Why? We continue without talking in depth about sexuality and without giving it the importance it has in human life, it is something that can build us as human beings but also destroy. That prostitution is not a concern of the general population is a problem, because all women are affected by the existence of physical spaces, made available to men by the State itself, where they can abuse the power they have over poor women and vulnerable. Many women and more and more men are joining the transformative and revolutionary movement for equality. But if we talk about equality we also have to talk about women in Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America, and what place we are giving them. You maintain that prostitution is not carried out by women. Who exercises it? Silvia Chejter,in his book

A Common Place: prostitution

, develops the concept that prostitution is not exercised by women, but by pimps and prostitutes, and that same idea is widely used by abolitionist women because we understand that someone who has power performs an act. Thus, it is the pimps and the whorers who practice prostitution, and the women in a situation of prostitution are the prostituted women, the women who are commercialized, dehumanized and instrumentalized with a purpose, which for the pimps is enrichment and for the prostituted men leisure and fun. Because the industry of sexual exploitation has turned this crime against the health and human rights of women into leisure and fun. More and more people defend that prostitutes are sex workers and that their situation should be regularized ...Those who say that lose sight of the fact that what is legislated on prostitution is going to fully affect all women, because in times of crisis we women are the first to be expelled from the labor market or in very, very precarious positions. And everything that is decided now about prostitution may not affect many adult women, but it may have to do with the future that we are leaving for today's girls and adolescents. Thinking that being at the sexual service of men is a job and that in the end each one chooses whether or not she wants to do it, only continues to trivialize the harm that prostitution produces. And not only women in prostitution, but also men. Women, in situations where we have to survive, never lose our dignity. But I do believe that men who prostitute women, both pimps and prostitutes do lose their dignity for using and enslaving other human beings, for not recognizing them as autonomous beings with their rights and freedoms. One of the chapters in his book is entitled 'How a whore is made'. You who have been a victim of human trafficking for sexual exploitation, how do you create a prostitute? The 'make a whore' is a concept that I have developed by analyzing in depth my own history, but also the stories of many, many women. There is a common thread that unites all of them and that is of course poverty, living in impoverished countries, but also the sexual violence that is exerted on us from a very early age. The men of these impoverished countries turn girls, adolescent women, into whores. This label is put on them through marginalization, through stigma, because it is our own societies that marginalize us, expel us from the community and throw us into these high-risk situations. And then it is the men themselves who begin to sell us the supposed salvation through prostitution, when we also have nothing to choose from. He says that it is very difficult for a prostitute to feel like a victim, that she even blames herself for what has happened to her ... That's right. It is not only about prostitution, it also occurs within the framework of a couple. Being a female victim has a pejorative burden: we are considered guilty of something, we are questioned, it is considered that we have sought what has happened to us, that we have caused it.From the legal point of view, a victim is an innocent being who is suffering or has suffered the violation of their rights, and therefore there is a person responsible, there is an aggressor. That places us in a place of inaction, as if we were inert, useless beings, who are worthless, and that is totally wrong, because within our limited possibilities we get ahead of very hard, very violent situations. When you can do nothing more than wait for the opportunity to get out of a situation, when you have no opportunities, when you have no escape, resisting is an act of active struggle. I suppose that if there are no victims there are no culprits, right? Exactly, that's the key. The fact that we are not able to identify ourselves as victims is very good for the system, because if there are no victims there are no aggressors. And if there are no victims or aggressors and there is no crime, the State has nothing to prevent, nothing to repair, nothing to guarantee. Everything is left in isolated cases, while it is something systematic, which passes by rule and has to do with politics. I believe that women in general, in one way or another, at different levels or in different stages of life, some more and others less, have gone through some or other situations of violence. By the mere fact of having been born women, we have been violated. You define the brothel as a concentration camp. How terrible is it? Yes. You just have to imagine for a moment what it means to have been born a woman in an impoverished country, that you have been chosen to get into those prostitutional spaces where you are at the disposal of the other, where you have to act until exhaustion based on what others want, where you are dehumanized, instrumentalized and turned into a mere receptacle of semen, every other day, with an expiration date. The pimps themselves say that the lifespan of a whore is two or three years, then they are absolutely useless. If we could put ourselves in the shoes of these women, we would understand that brothels and more and more flats are concentration camps exclusively for impoverished women. We take our heads when some perfume brands, for example, use the image of a woman to sell, because we understand that this objectifies and denigrates all women. However, the same does not happen when you see a naked woman in the street, with a chair and an umbrella if it is hot, next to a bonfire if it's cold. Imagine thousands of kilometers from our house, in a roundabout, in a thong and with heels ... It is a deeply violent act, and that without thinking about all the damage that the whorers cause. But there are women who say they exercise prostitution voluntarily ... There are some women who say that they do want to, that they are delighted, that they have chosen it ... I can't go in there, they are subjective issues. What I am saying is that this has to do with all women. I am happy for those who say they have chosen it freely and are doing well. But here we are not talking about individual cases, we are talking about that if we legislate based on what is good for some, that legislation increases inequality between women and men,and also inequality among women themselves based on social class. You cannot legislate based on what can be good for some if that affects all other women. And how is this resolved? We demand a comprehensive abolitionist law. We understand that abolishing prostitution is a long process and that it involves many fields: a reform of the Penal Code is necessary that prosecutes all forms of pimping, it is necessary that the claimants of prostitution, the prostitutes, be fined, because we understand that the desires sexuality of some people cannot be above the human rights of women, and awareness campaigns and sex-affective education in values and ethics are also needed to see the other person as what they are, a person, and not as an instrument through which to ejaculate. Is pornography related to prostitution? Yes absolutely. Pornography is the great tool used by the sexual exploitation industry to manufacture whores on the one hand and whores on the other. Girls who apparently do not have financial needs are instilled with the idea that being a prostitute is very good, it is something that allows you to buy a handbag and a mobile. And to this is added that more and more women are at risk of falling into prostitution. Today, thousands of women in this country are not going to have anything to put on the table and are going to consider whether to suck a man's penis in order to feed their children. That is cruel, absolutely cruel. entrevientreentrfinalPornography is the great tool used by the sexual exploitation industry to manufacture whores on the one hand and whores on the other.
