Butikofer said that if the Federal Network Agency (BNA) approves the commissioning of the pipeline, the project "can still be stopped by the European Commission."

The MEP said that if strong arguments are found that a positive BNA decision violates EU energy legislation, "the project may turn into an investment ruin," Die Zeit reported.

The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was fully completed at 08:45 Moscow time on September 10.

The Kremlin noted that when Nord Stream 2 is launched, both energy suppliers and their consumers will be the winners.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that it would not be possible to obtain permission from the FRG regulator to launch the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the near future.

According to him, this process may take four months.
