Donya Karimi's mother Haleh Fredriksson tells Morgonstudion that she received a call from her daughter who, after sexist comments, was told by school staff that she would change.

And that she hardly wanted to believe it was true.

- I was angry.

I was very upset that you can even come up with the idea in Sweden 2021 that you tell girls that they should adapt and they should dress in a certain way so that it will be good for the boys.

The daughter was most angry and shocked at how it all happened, she continues.

"Gets pissed off"

After ending the conversation with the daughter, Haleh Fredriksson tried to contact the school, but could not reach either the principal or others who had been involved in the situation.

The incident occurred at a school in Västergötland in April.

The school has since reported to both the Swedish Schools Inspectorate and the DO, which are now investigating the case.

Josefine Fälth is chairman of Sweden's student unions.

She says that the school's actions are not appropriate at all and believes that the work on basic values has failed completely.

- I get pissed when I see events like this.

- A student should never have to go to school and feel that even a teacher or classmate objectifies one, but you should not go there to be judged on your knowledge.

Be obvious to report

A DO report from last spring shows that the number of reports, tips and complaints about discrimination concerning the school area almost doubled between 2015 and 2020. Of 586 reports last year, around a third were classified as sex discrimination or sexual harassment.

For Donya Karimi's mother, it was obvious to report what had happened.

- I think it is we adults who set these basic values for our children.

The school must work more with gender issues, at a much earlier age.

And what we do today will affect our future.

SVT has been in contact with the principal of the school in question, who declines to comment on the case while the investigation is ongoing.
