Since the middle of May, the fourth vaccination phase has been going on in Skåne.

In the beginning, it was almost impossible to book an appointment and the vaccinators had to reject unbooked visitors at the door.

Recently, however, it has been difficult to attract the group that has not yet taken its first dose, which has meant that vaccinators have had to discard doses.

- We have not been able to get all the doses out when the public's willingness to vaccinate fails, says Kenneth Kronohage who is a partner in the private vaccinator MACC.

9000 doses have been discarded

According to statistics from the Skåne region, there are a total of about 9,000 doses that have had to be discarded so far.

This is just over one percent of the doses that have been available.

That there have not been more can be partly explained by the fact that the region and the vaccinators are now working together to distribute doses between each other before they get old.

- The region sees who orders the vaccine and then contacts the customer and says that there is someone else who has doses left over.

So when we have had over, we have transported to other vaccinators and when someone else has had over, they have transported to us, says Kenneth Kronohage.

More waste when the business changes

But there is now a risk that more doses will be discarded.

The private vaccinators will stop receiving people who have not yet received the first dose as early as September 20th.

Instead, together with the region, they will work more with outreach activities at, for example, larger events and there it is more difficult to plan for the exact amount of vaccine needed.

- We have to bring some extra vaccine.

An outreach activity where the vaccine runs out is not particularly good and it will increase wastage, says Kenneth Kronohage.
