On September 14, 2021 local time, in Yozgat Province, Turkey, excavators discovered a 3,500-year-old mosaic in central Turkey. This is the oldest mosaic in the world.

This mosaic is composed of 3147 stones and measures 3x7 meters (10x23 feet). It was discovered in Usakli Hoyuk in the Sorgun area of ​​Yozgat. Surface surveys in the area began in 2008 and excavation work began in 2012. .

Huseyin Ciftci, director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Yozgat Province, said that the excavations were carried out jointly by the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage and Museums, the University of Bozok and the University of Pisa in Italy.

  "In scientific research, it has been determined that the mosaic found is the first mosaic in world history. The mosaic mold also supports this because it is very primitive. We plan to use this place for tourism." Discovery team leader, Pisa University lecturer Anacleto D’agostino said that the mosaic they found was from 1500 BC. He also said that this mosaic is the oldest in the world. He said: “We We know that there are similar mosaics in Greece, but we think the mosaics here are older than the ones there."
