The Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM), one of the main film events on the African continent, has been postponed "to a later date" due to the Covid-19 pandemic for the second year in a row, organizers said on Tuesday.

The 19th edition of this festival, the annual meeting of film buffs from the Maghreb, was to take place from November 29 to December 7 in the city of southern Morocco.

The previous 2020 edition had not taken place due to the health crisis.

On the other hand, the "Atlas Workshops" - a support program for young filmmakers from Africa and the Middle East - will take place from November 22 to 25, said the organizers of the FIFM, in a press release. by the MAP news agency.

Thus, the Marrakech festival "continues to develop its laboratory for discovering new talents from cinemas on the African continent and the Arab world," the statement said.

Egyptian filmmaker Omar El Zohairy, one of the winners of the "Atlas Workshops", supported by the American giant Netflix, won the Cannes Film Festival's Critics' Week grand prize in July for his film "Feathers".

Since its creation, the FIFM has seen great names in world cinema, such as American directors Martin Scorsese, Iranian Abbas Kiarostami or Hungarian Béla Tarr.
