Arab newspapers... Prisoners in Lebanon live in miserable conditions

At a time when it is difficult for the Lebanese to secure their daily food, with the record rise in prices, the question arises: What do prisoners behind bars, who suffer woes in times of “prosperity” and the dollar on the exchange rate of 1500 pounds.

So how now, that most of their families are from the poor class that has plunged into the well of extreme poverty?

The question also arises: Is the prison administration still able to provide services as before?

At a time when everyone heard the cries of the security forces and the army, which rose recently after their salaries became worthless.

One of Roumieh's prisoners confirmed to "Al-Nahar" that the situation was no longer bearable, and said: "We suffocated, even the amount of food was no longer the same as before, it decreased to a third, and the quality of food changed, as the meat disappeared from the meals and the amount of chicken decreased." He added: “As for the prices of the prison store, they doubled, as the rise in the dollar exchange rate was automatically reflected on it, and the prices are mostly higher than they are abroad, this is accompanied by economic hardship that is going through the families, because their incomes are still the same as they were in Lebanese pounds. ».

Several associations are trying to extend a helping hand to the prisoners, but the situation requires a state plan and a large budget, at a time when the treasury has emptied of money. These associations “Justice and Mercy” were established 25 years ago to protect human rights, especially the marginalized and the deprived of liberties, that is, prisoners and their families and drug dependents.

The association’s president, Father Najib Baaklini, confirmed to An-Nahar that prison is the mirror of society, and it is a microcosm of it and vice versa. Just as the situation in Lebanon has reached collapse, so is the state of prisons, and as we see outside prison, corruption, leadership and nepotism are also behind bars.

He explained: "Before (Corona) and the beginning of the collapse, prison conditions were miserable, so how now, people abroad cannot buy their needs, so how will prisoners be able to do that?"
