The Social Democrats (SPD) in Germany are expanding their leadership over Armin Lachet's conservative blocs.

It shows a survey made by the opinion institute Insa on behalf of Bild am Sonntags, writes the news agency TT.

On September 26, the Germans go to the polls.

The main candidates for the post of Federal Chancellor after Angela Merkel (CDU) are Olaf Scholz (SPD), Armin Laschet (CDU) and Annalena Baerbock (The Greens).

Until recently, the election looked to be record-breaking, but in the latest survey, the SPD receives support of 26 percent, an increase of one percentage point since last week.

This is the highest figure for the SPD since 2017.

- It is the best in 16 years, which is sensational.

This indicates that something has happened very quickly, says SVT's Christoffer Wendick.

Armin Laschet's conservative blocs get an unchanged 20 percent, while the Greens back one percentage point to 15 percent.
