Australian Daniel Ricciardo won his 8th Formula 1 Grand Prix in Italy, the first with the McLaren team, beating teammate Lando Norris at Monza, where Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) retired after s 'to be hooked.

A double as a resurrection: McLaren had not won a Grand Prix since 2012 in Brazil, and Ricciardo since 2018 in Monaco.

For the British team, the party is total with Norris 2nd for the double, ahead of Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) who completes this unprecedented podium.

"Not only to win, but to make a double, it's crazy ... For McLaren, being on the podium is huge, not to mention the double. It's for the Papaya team (of the orange color of McLaren, editor's note) For once, words fail me ", reacted the winner before getting on the podium.

Up there, dominating from his pedestal the entire delirious McLaren team, he was able to revive his very singular celebration: the "Shoey", which consists of filling your shoe with sparkling wine to drink it.

And to drink his companions of fortune, to the boss of the stable Zak Brown.

Ricciardo, one of F1's most popular drivers, also had a few words in Italian for the spectators, who were more hoping for a victory for the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr, 4th and 6th.

The Australian had not won a race since the 2018 Monaco GP, while driving a Red Bull, with whom he has won seven times.

After two years of a disappointing collaboration at Renault in 2019 and 2020, the 32-year-old driver joined McLaren in 2021 to bounce back.

His best result this season so far was a 4th place in Belgium.

Thanks to his brilliance, he climbed from one place to 8th place in the championship, overtaking the French Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri).

Winner here last year, the latter had to retire early in the race due to problems with his car.

The races at Monza give since 2019 separate races and 2021 has not detonated.

Starting 2nd on the starting grid behind Verstappen, Ricciardo took over the Dutchman from the first straight.

"But I knew that even if we got the best start, there was no guarantee that we would lead the whole race," said Ricciardo.

That was without counting two facts of the race.

First, a completely missed pit stop for Verstappen, who lost several seconds on the Australian.

Then, above all, the clash between the two favorites for the world title, who neutralized each other.

After stopping in the pits in turn on lap 26 of 53, Hamilton came out just ahead of Verstappen.

At the end of the straight line, the two cars entered the chicane side to side.

Mounted on a curb on the bend, Verstappen saw his car climb on top of his opponent's.

Both ended up in the gravel and had to retire, coming out of their cars unscathed.

But the image may remain at the end of the year as the one that best summarizes the intense title fight between the two rivals.

Only five points separate Verstappen from his pursuer in the world championship with eight races remaining out of the 22 on the calendar.

This accident is reminiscent of the one at Silverstone in July at the British Grand Prix, when Verstappen had to retire on the first lap, while Hamilton had finally won.

For the Briton, this is the first retirement since the Austrian GP in 2018.

Starting from last place on the starting grid, Finland's Bottas managed to come back up to finally get a 3rd place.

Behind Leclerc, Sergio Pérez took 5th place.

The other Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine) took 10th place.
