According to the city, around 150 citizens took the opportunity to look at the models for a memorial to commemorate the victims of the attack on February 19, 2020 and to have them explained by the artists.

Many of them filled out the yellow slip of paper to mark their favorites among the models and to formulate their evaluation.

However, it was not a matter of a vote, according to Lord Mayor Claus Kaminsky (SPD) at the opening of the citizens' weekend in the Congress Park Hanau (CPH), but rather to gather a picture of the mood.

Kaminsky described the response as positive.

The survey in the CPH showed "how intensively and seriously the citizens deal with the topic," said Kaminsky.

Martin Hoppe, department head for culture in the town hall, assessed the votes cast as positive, he did not report any critical or negative comments.

The citizens would have thanked, for example, that “Hanau does not forget”.

Talk about memorial winning models

The winning models were described as well thought out, sensitive, impressive and given special accents.

It has been said several times that all models are of high quality.

Relatives of assassination victims who were involved in the selection of the memorial winning models would have gotten into conversation with the citizens.

The models can be seen until September 18 in the Kulturforum on Freiheitsplatz on the second floor.

It is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

They will then be presented in front of the mayor's office in the town hall. An appointment is necessary for this. The presentation also runs in words, pictures and with film recordings of the models on the Internet at

There is also the opportunity to express your opinion. In the opinion of the selection jury with representatives from politics, administration and the victims' members as well as the advisory board, the five models are the best of 118 submissions to an artist competition advertised by the city. According to the city, Nicole Deitelhoff from the Leibniz Institute Hessian Peace and Conflict Research, who provided technical support during the selection process, and Erdem Tuncer, Consul General of Turkey in Frankfurt, were among the guests at the CPH.

The memorial should be ready for the second anniversary of the attack on February 19, 2022.

The location has not yet been determined.

According to Kaminsky, the final winning model should please the relatives and the “city society”.

The advisory board and jury will take into account the ratings of the citizens' weekend and on the Internet when making their decision, says the mayor.

The first place should be determined in September.

The city councilors have the last word.
