In Vietnam, a man was sentenced to five years in prison for breaking his country's quarantine rules and transmitting Covid-19 to several people.
Le Van Tri, 28, was convicted of "spreading dangerous infectious diseases to other people" after traveling in July to his native province of Ca Mau in the south of the country from Ho Chi Minh City at the height of the epidemic, according to a decision made public on the website of the local court.
One person is believed to have died after being infected
The young man, who tested positive for Covid-19 on July 7, was accused of not having respected his mandatory 21-day quarantine at home when he arrived in Ca Mau, a region relatively untouched by the virus at the time. "Tri's violation of the home medical quarantine regulation resulted in the infection of many people with Covid-19 and the death of one person on August 7, 2021," according to the court. According to state media, eight people have been infected because of the young man.
After keeping the number of cases low last year, Vietnam is now facing a strong wave of Covid-19.
The country has more than 540,000 infections and more than 13,000 deaths.
The vast majority of cases have been recorded since the end of April.
The capital Hanoi, as well as Ho Chi Minh City have been subjected to strict lockdowns in recent months.
In Vietnam, several people have already been sentenced for spreading the virus.
A 32-year-old man from Hai Duong was sentenced to eighteen months in prison in July and a Vietnam Airlines flight attendant to two years in prison suspended in March on the same grounds.
