Carlos Queiroz was chosen Wednesday as coach of the Egypt football team, a post in which he succeeds Hossam Badri, sacked on Monday, the Egyptian Football Federation said in a statement.

The federation specifies that Mr. Queiroz will be assisted by the Egyptians Diaa al-Sayed, as coach, and Essam al-Hadary, as goalkeeper coach.

Monday, the day after a laborious draw against Gabon (1-1) in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, the federation sacked Hossam Badri as well as all of his technical team.

Badri, 61, succeeded in September 2019 from Mexican Javier Aguirre, himself sacked after the elimination of the Pharaohs in the round of 16 of the last African Cup of Nations.

Carlos Queiroz, who had been unemployed since early December 2020 and his departure from the Colombian national team of which he took the reins in February 2019, is expected in Cairo early next week.

A seasoned coach, the 68-year-old Portuguese coached Sporting Portugal (1993-1996), Real Madrid (2003-2004) and was Alex Ferguson's assistant at English club Manchester United (2002-2003 and 2004). -2008).

He was also the coach of Portugal (1991-1993 then 2008-2010), South Africa (2000-2002), United Arab Emirates (1997-1999) and Iran (2011-2019).
