What can schools do to reverse the trend of low learning outcomes?

This question is now being answered in a study at the University of Gothenburg - by following six principals in vulnerable areas in Gothenburg.

- The purpose is to address the lack of equality in the school, by focusing on the principal's role, says Åsa Hirsh, researcher in pedagogy at the University of Gothenburg.

The study also includes a network of 25 principals who give each other advice and support.

The plan is that the project will also be extended to Stockholm and Malmö, and the final result is expected in 2023.

The results are falling again

Sandeklevsskolan in Bergsjön is one of the schools that has managed to reverse a negative trend.

- It is important to have high expectations - and support to get there, says principal Charlotta Björk.

Upper secondary school eligibility increased for several years in a row, but the school is below the national average and now the results are also falling again since last year.

The explanation, according to principal Charlotta Björk, is that it is about variation between year groups and an effect of distance studies during the pandemic.

- We are not satisfied, but we want every single student to enter high school, she says.
