57 Global Warming Countermeasures "Visualization" September 7, 19:14

Let's replace your

car with an electric car and

replace your light bulb with an LED

Have you ever wondered how effective global warming countermeasures are?

In the latest research, the effects are quantified and can be compared.

Find out about your efforts.

(Social Department, Motoyoshi Okamoto / International Department, Tamura Galaxy / Network News Department, Shinya Fujishima)

How effective is it?

"Global warming may increase extreme heat waves and heavy rains." The

other day, we reported in the news about a report compiled by experts around the world who study global warming.

However, on the internet, there are

voices such as

"I understand that it is difficult, but what should I do?"

"Even

if I do

my best alone ..."

.

I (Okamoto), who usually interviews about global warming, try to take measures against global warming, such as replacing the light bulbs at home with LEDs, but I realized that I'm not sure how effective it is. I did.

"Quantified" effect

Under such circumstances, research by the National Institute for Environmental Studies was announced.

Specific figures show how much greenhouse gas reduction is effective for 57 measures related to housing, transportation, food, etc.

Of these, the following graph shows the top 20 most effective measures.

* 57 A detailed explanation of the actions and effects is at the end of the article.

* The figures are the amount of greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide equivalent) that can be reduced on average if one Japanese person continues the actions for one year.

* Pink = housing / blue = moving / green = food / gray = other measures

Looking at this, the most effective way is to rebuild a house that can use energy efficiently.

It has the effect of reducing up to 2.1 tons of greenhouse gases.

Next, measures related to movement are lined up, and "Make your car into an electric vehicle (charged with renewable energy)" is 0.47 tons, and when charging an electric vehicle with normal power, it is about half, 0.24 tons.

In addition, there are measures such as "vegan" and "vegetarian" who eat mainly vegetables instead of meat.

Reporter's measures, I investigated

Then, how well can I (Okamoto) take measures against global warming?

I chose the one I'm working on recently.

Partly due to the influence of Corona, I have more opportunities to telework at home.

Commuting is exclusively by train.

Use a bicycle to move nearby.

I switched my home electricity to renewable energy (after consulting with my family).

The light bulb is replaced with an LED, and the book is reading an e-book.

If you choose these measures and simply add up the numbers ... the result is 3.4 tons.

Is this enough?

★★ Please refer to the explanation of 57 measures at the end of the article and make your choice!

★★

The target is 3.9 tons per person!

According to Rui Koide, a researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies, who led the research, the average amount of greenhouse gases emitted by Japanese people in their daily lives is 7.1 tons per person per year.

Nowadays, the common goal in the world is to limit the temperature rise due to global warming to 1.5 ° C compared to the latter half of the 19th century.

Failure to achieve this increases the risk of frequent and life-threatening extreme phenomena such as "maximum temperatures near 50 degrees Celsius" and "super typhoons."

However, in order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to reduce 3.9 tons (!) Per capita per year by 2030, nine years later.

Therefore, my current measures do not reach my goal.

According to Mr. Koide, the influence of each action may actually be less effective than simply adding up the reduction amount of each action.

My honest opinion is that it's not easy to reach your goals.

Rui Koide, Researcher, National Institute for Environmental Studies

"It is not easy to stop global warming by individual efforts. However, by incorporating various measures that suit your lifestyle, you can take measures against global warming. Demand for products and services will expand, leading to changes in society as a whole. "

"Although the effect is great, there are some measures that are difficult to choose because it costs money, but in the future, with the assistance of the government and the expansion of products and services by companies, it will become a society where consumers can easily choose. It is important to go

"Don't buy more than you need"

Of the 57 measures, the one that I felt was easy to get started and had a high effect was "wearing clothes for a long time (0.19 tons reduction)".

In fact, clothes are often derived from petroleum, and the problem is that greenhouse gases are emitted when they are incinerated.

I (Tamura) visited the store of Patagonia, a major outdoor equipment company in the United States, in Shibuya, Tokyo.

When I entered the store, the first thing I noticed was a panel saying "Don't buy things you don't need."

It's a catch phrase, but the ones on the first floor of this store are used clothes.

Approximately 1000 pieces purchased from company staff were lined up and sold at about half the list price.

Patagonia is a company that has been focusing on environmental measures, but since August, it has started selling used clothing at this store for a limited time.

Looking at the used clothing lined up, a message from the original owner was attached.

For example, one mountaineering pants has a handwritten memory that says, "I was there when I ate a delicious mountain lodge Gohan at Tengu Sanso in Hakuba!"

I visited on weekdays, but many customers came, with the aim of getting each outfit to be attached to me and reducing the number of clothes that are discarded.

Patagonia PR manager Michiko Rogers

"I'm wearing an aloha shirt that I bought when I joined the company 20 years ago (laughs). In Japan, there are people who are thinking about the environment and starting to think about new ways of living. I feel that the number is increasing. I hope that people who have only bought new products will pick up the products here and think that used products are also good. "

Do you wear clothes 30 times?

Efforts to wear clothes for a long time have begun to spread as a campaign called "Wear Me 30 Times" in Italy, which is said to be the fashion center of the world.

Clothes buyers access a dedicated site from the QR code printed on the tag.

Upload a selfie photo every time you put on your clothes.

When you wear it 30 times, you can get a coupon.

Currently, more than 50 fashion brands are participating in this initiative, mainly in Europe, and Indian and Indonesian brands are also joining from Asia.

You can get on the electric car from today

More effective measures than "wearing clothes for a long time (0.19 tons reduction)" are related to cars.

"Turning your car into an electric vehicle (charging with renewable energy)" ... 0.47 tons reduction

"Use of car sharing" ... 0.21 tons reduction

It seems that it is a high cost hurdle for people who own a car to replace it with an electric car, but the “car share of electric cars” that can be easily started is expanding.

Two cars parked in the parking lot of the city hall in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Actually, this is an electric car.

It is one of the electric vehicle stations set up by venture companies, and is used by the city as a public vehicle during the day on weekdays, but can also be used by citizens on weekday nights and weekends.

There are 27 such stations in total in Odawara City and the surrounding Hakone Town, and a total of 47 electric vehicles are installed.

If you want to ride, you can get on for about 200 to 300 yen per 15 minutes by registering as a member and making a reservation from the smartphone app.

Approximately 70% of the electricity used for charging is covered by renewable energy, and you can check the charging rate and mileage of each car in advance with the app.

We talked to a male office worker in Odawara City who is using this service.

Manabu Mochizuki, who uses car sharing

"When my daughter graduated from high school and didn't need to pick up and drop off, I used to use it for shopping once in a while, so I took the plunge and sold my car. There is no maintenance fee, and the usage fee is about several thousand yen. I am satisfied that it is environmentally friendly because I work in the nature-rich Hakone tourism industry. "

According to the venture company that runs this business, there is a growing interest in electric vehicles among people who use car sharing.

REXEV Director Takashi Fujii

"I've heard many times from car-sharing users that they chose an electric car when they bought a new car. I feel that they feel free to enjoy the goodness of electric cars."

Global warming countermeasures for society as a whole

I think that the research on 57 behaviors we interviewed this time is epoch-making in considering the big global issue of global warming in the lives of each of us.

People tend to think that "countermeasures against global warming" require patience, but by using clothes for a long time, you will become more attached to them and become more interested in the natural environment around you. I felt I could work on it.

However, there are some behaviors such as rebuilding a house that cost a lot of money, and teleworking that is difficult to select based on individual judgment.

I think that global warming countermeasures need to be considered not only by individual efforts but also by the actions of governments and companies as a whole.
