Three abalone fishermen, checked in violation on March 29 by agents of the Iroise Marine Natural Park, received a heavy fine, reports France Bleu Breizh Izel.

These men, who were fishing in the Molène archipelago, off the coast of Conquet (Finistère), were fined for non-compliance with the regulations in force.

Very controlled fishing

Abalone being a protected species, fishing is prohibited from April 1 to September 14.

It must be limited to 20 shells per day and per person, and of a size at least equal to 9 centimeters.

The three poachers were in violation.

One of them had caught 32 abalone, including 30 under the regulation size.

The Brest prosecutor's office therefore imposed fines of 650, 750 and 900 euros on them for non-compliance with the quota and the minimum fishing size for this crustacean.

The abalone season, which is due to open next week, will be subject to numerous controls, warns the Iroise Marine Natural Park.
