06 September 2021 The Lombardy Region asks for more restrictive rules for electric scooters.

"From 1 June 2020 to today, in the city of Milan alone, Areu has received 659 requests for intervention for accidents with these means, almost one a day. Their danger is clear to everyone", underlined the regional councilor to Security, Riccardo De Corato.

"Legislative action is urgently needed", he added, explaining: "I presented to President Fontana, who accepted it, and it was approved by the Executive, a bill to the Parliament that first of all provides for the generalized insurance obligation for civil liability towards third parties, moreover the limitation of the driving of electric scooters only to people who have reached 18 years of age, with consequent prohibition for minors, and the obligation to wear a protective helmet for everyone ".

Fontana's approval was not long in coming: "Today we are presenting a bill that will be advanced to Parliament related to the circulation of electric scooters: considering the dramatic events that continue to recur in the Lombardy Region, legislation is necessary", he said. said the governor at Palazzo Lombardia after the meeting of the council.

The repeated accidents, including fatal ones, continued Fontana, "lead to a more careful reflection on the way in which these vehicles can circulate".

Scooters are "the cause of many fatal accidents, as occurred in Sesto San Giovanni (MI)", where a 13-year-old lost his life, and in Segrate, where, he specified, "we came close". Among the requests made in the Lombard bill, De Corato mentioned the prohibition of driving electric scooters for children under 18, the obligation to wear a helmet and the obligation to take out an insurance policy.
