Rescuers from the CRS de Gavarnie were called early Sunday afternoon for a fall on the ledge path, which connects the Pailha refuge to the Gavarnie circus.

A man from the Eastern Pyrenees, who was hiking with his wife in this mountain sector of the Hautes-Pyrénées, unscrewed about twenty meters, according to France Bleu.

Witnesses and his wife tried to rescue him, as did members of the CRS when they arrived.

Despite their intervention, the 54-year-old man could not be resuscitated.
